How to Extend the Lifespan of Your London Carpets

Carpets are an essential addition to any residence or business. They can transform any room by adding luxury, insulation, and comfort. However, due to the high cost of carpet replacement, proper care is essential for extending their lifespan and maintaining their best appearance. You can ensure the carpets stay functional for years with the right care and attention. Here's a collection of maintenance tips to get you started.

Tips To Extend the Life of Carpets in Essex

Vacuum Regularly

Carpet fibers can become degraded over time due to dirt, dust, and other trapped particles. Vacuum your carpets at least once weekly to prevent this, or more frequently in areas with a lot of foot traffic. Pay close attention to the corners and edges of your carpets; these areas are frequently overlooked and can accumulate significant dirt and dust. Use a crevice tool or other specialized attachment to get into these tight spaces and thoroughly clean your London carpets.

Spot Clean as Soon as Possible

Spills and stains do happen, so dealing with them as soon as possible is important to stop them from worsening. Spot clean spills with a carpet-specific spot cleaner after blotting with a clean cloth or paper towel. Follow the cleaner's instructions carefully, and avoid rubbing or scrubbing the stain because doing so could damage the carpet's fibres.

Hire a Professional Cleaner For your Essex Carpets

It is highly recommended that a professional clean your carpets in Essex at least once a year. Deep-seated dirt and stains that regular cleaning might miss can be removed with the equipment and expertise of professional cleaners. Additionally, they can assist in restoring the colour and texture of your carpets, giving them a brand-new appearance.

Make sure you do your homework before hiring a carpet cleaner, and choose a reputable business with experience cleaning carpets. Search for surveys and proposals from different clients and get some information about their cleaning cycle and gear. You should get a clear estimate from a professional cleaner of how much it will cost, how long it will take to clean your carpets and any additional services that might be suggested.

Remove Shoes Outside the Premises

One of the simplest ways to remove dirt from your Essex carpets is to remove your shoes before entering your home. Shoes can follow a lot of soil and microorganisms, making your floor coverings separate quicker over the long run. Consider wearing slippers or socks indoors to keep your feet warm and comfortable, and make sure you have a designated area near your entryway where you can store your shoes.

Maintain Humidity Levels

High humidity can dampen carpets, encouraging mould and mildew growth, causing damage and odours. Low moistness, then again, can make floor coverings dry out and become weak over the long haul.

Depending on your climate and the time of year, you should use a dehumidifier or a humidifier in your home to keep the humidity level at the right level.

Rotate Furniture

Furniture can wear your carpets unevenly if left in the same position for an extended period. To prevent this, consider rotating your furniture regularly to distribute weight and pressure across your London carpets evenly. This can assist with forestalling long-lasting spaces and other harm that can abbreviate the life expectancy of your rugs.

Also, consider using furniture covers or cushions to safeguard your rugs from scratches and other harm when turning furniture.

Use Carpet Protectants

A carpet protectant is a treatment applied to carpets following cleaning to help prevent future stains and damage. It works by putting a barrier between the carpet's fibres and dirt or spills, making it easier to clean up messes before they turn into stains that last forever.

Protectants for carpets in Essex can be applied by a trained carpet cleaner or purchased as a spray for use at home. When applied correctly, it can provide significant protection against spills, stains, and other kinds of damage. Ensure the carpet protectant you choose is safe to use in your home or business and compatible with your type of carpet. Before applying the product to your carpet's entire surface, test it on a small, undetectable area and carefully follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Invest in Quality Padding

Carpet padding protects the carpet from excessive wear and tear. Choose high-quality padding that matches the needs of your carpets and the level of foot traffic in your home. Proper padding can significantly increase the life of the carpets.

Limit Sun Exposure

Direct Sunlight can damage the Essex carpets. Make sure to protect your carpets from direct sunlight. Use blinds and curtains on the windows to limit the amount of sunlight. This will help protect the carpets' colour and prevent their premature ageing.

Regular Maintenance Checks

Make it a habit to inspect your carpets regularly for signs of damage, wear and staining. If you catch the issues early, it will help prevent small problems from becoming bigger. Also, it'll keep you from paying for expensive repairs.

Follow these tips to extend the life of your rugs and keep them looking their best for a long time. Your London carpets may last longer if you vacuum them regularly, clean up spills and stains promptly, hire a professional to clean them, and take preventative measures like using mats and removing shoes. Your carpets can continue to provide luxury, comfort, and insulation in your home or business for many years with proper care.

Elevate your Living Room:A guide to Choose the Perfect London Carpets

Are you looking for a solution to make your living room more inviting and stylish? Choosing the right carpet is a perfect way to achieve the living room of your dreams. Carpeting can completely change the look and feel of the room and is one of the most important aspects of interior design. With so many options, the question arises, how do you choose the best one for you.

So for our daily readers, we have brought this guide that will provide you with the information you need to make while choosing the perfect London carpets for your living room. From colours and patterns to textures and materials, this blog will take you through every piece of information you need to know to select a carpet that is not only visually appealing but also comfortable.

Choosing the right colour

Choosing the right colour is the most important part of selecting the carpets in Essex If you select a colour that does not match the rest of your home, it will stick out like a sore thumb. This can completely ruin the aesthetics of the home and will make the room feel disjointed. You should consider the colour of your furniture while selecting the carpet. It is also crucial to keep the colours of the walls and floor in mind. However, with so many colours to choose from, it can be a very difficult decision to make. Luckily we have a few ways to make the process easier for you.

  • First, consider the mood you want your living room to convey. Different colours convey different moods.
  • Secondly, think about the rest of your house. Select a colour that best matches the overall aesthetics of your house.
  • Last but not least, consider the function of the room. Since different rooms have different uses, you must understand that the colour that works well in one room may not work in another.

Selecting the right pattern

You all know that various patterns are available in the market. Here is a quick tip for our readers on how to choose the correct pattern of carpets in Kent

  •  If your home is modern or contemporary, bold patterns will be a perfect choice.
  •  However, if you have a traditional home, please go for subtle patterns.

Once you know the overall style of your home, the pattern selection comes down to personal preferences. If you are having a hard time deciding, then here are some quick tips:

  • Think about the vibe you want your living room to convey. Different patterns have different vibes. For example:
    • Geometric patterns like stripes and hexagons give a modern and dynamic vibe
    • A floral pattern has its own charm and elegance.
    •  You can use abstract patterns for anything.
    • A neutral pattern gives you a sense of calm and tranquility.
    • Vintage carpets add a sense of history to living rooms.
    • Stripes and anchors on the other hand add a breezy, coastal vibe to a room.
    •  Adding patterns from different cultures can make a space feel multicultural.

Exploring Different Materials

As you all know, carpets in London come in different materials, each with unique properties. Though these properties are cosmetic, they can make a huge difference in the overall choice of carpets. The most important properties of different materials are:

  • The density of the fibre
  • The type of the fibre
  • The cut-out of the fibre

The fibre type refers to the material from which the carpets are made. The most commonly used fibres are nylon, olefin and polyester. The density of the fibre denotes how tightly the fibres are woven together. High-density fibres are more durable, but they are less comfortable. The cut of the fibre refers to how the strands are cut. High-quality fibres have strands cut at an angle, allowing them to sit flatter against the floor.

Choosing the Right Carpet Construction

It's also important to know how the London carpet is made. It's how it's made. There's two kinds of pile construction: cut pile and loop pile. Carpets with cut piles are made of straight fibers woven together. They're cheaper and don't last as long as loop pile carpets. The loop pile carpet has more texture and a plush appearance, so it's great for high-traffic areas.

Choosing the Right Carpet Width

It's also important to consider the width when choosing a carpet in Kent. The width of your carpet will determine how wide the rows of strands are. Residential carpets are usually 3 feet wide. However, you can also get carpets that are 2.5 feet wide and 4.5 feet wide. Your living room's carpet width will depend on how much traffic it gets. The wider the carpet, the more wear and tear it will take.

Selecting the Right Carpet Length

Your carpet's length is also important. Eight feet is the standard length for residential carpeting. It's the most common length, but there are also 9-foot and 10-foot carpets. The length of your carpets in Essex will depend on how much traffic your living room gets and how much furniture you have. A room with more furniture needs a longer carpet.

Installing the Carpets in London

Installation is another important factor to consider. There are three different types of installation:

  • Loose laid: Loose laid is the least common method, which involves unrolling the carpets and then tacking down the edges. This is inexpensive, but the fibres of the carpet become loose with time.
  • Bound: It is the most common installation method. In this method, the carpet is unrolled, cut to length and then bound with latex.
  • Fully bound: It is similar to bound installation, but the binding is done on both sides of the carpets. It is more expensive than the installation method, but it provides the highest level of durability.

Making Sure Your Carpet is a Good Fit

The last thing you want to do is make sure the carpet fits. Carpets come in three widths (3 ft, 2 .5 ft, and 4.5 ft) and two lengths (8 ft and 9 ft). You can determine what width is right for your living room by measuring the width and dividing it by 3. Then round it down to the nearest whole number. The length of your carpet depends on how much furniture you have and how much traffic the room gets.

The London carpet you choose for your living room is important. There are so many options available it's hard to know where to start. Our guide has given you all the information you need to make an informed decision and find the perfect carpet. Weaving Culture and Design in Essex and London, England!

Carpets in London have long been more than just floor coverings; they are woven narrative threads that link cultures and capture the character of a place. They are artistic creations that capture the essence of tradition and style. The craft of carpet weaving has flourished for generations in the scenic English county of Essex, representing the area's rich cultural legacy and artistic talent. Some of the best carpet weavers in the world call this county home, and they produce high-quality carpets with intricate designs and vivid colours.

The Historical Roots of Carpets in Essex

Essex has a long history of carpet manufacturing, beginning with the arrival of Flemish weavers in the sixteenth century. These weavers carried their expertise and knowledge of carpet weaving with them, which they shared with their trainees. The craft of carpet weaving in Essex has developed over the years to become a distinctive and one-of-a-kind tradition. Ancient carpet remnants and evidence of crude looms are found in archaeological digs, indicating that this skill has been performed for over a thousand years. Essex carpets travelled to other regions as trade routes grew, garnering recognition and appeal.

The Evolution of Carpet Designs in Essex

  1. Traditional Patterns and Motifs:- Essex carpets are recognized for their classic, timeless designs. Delicate flower designs, geometric patterns, and elaborate borders characterize these carpets. Each design depicts the aesthetic spirit of the area while telling a distinct story.
  2. Modern Innovations in Carpet Design:- While maintaining its historical roots, Essex carpet weaving has incorporated contemporary designs. Bold colours, abstract designs, and the synthesis of many artistic styles are all current experiments carpet designers use. This fusion of tradition and modernity has made new channels for creative expression possible.

The Weaving Techniques of Essex Carpets

  1. Handloom Weaving: A Time-Honoured Tradition :-  The foundation of Essex's carpet-making tradition is handloom weaving. Skilled artisans delicately weave each thread into carpets that exhibit unmatched artistry and attention to detail. The complex process yields one-of-a-kind, heirloom-calibre items that are valued by collectors all over the world.
  2. Machine Weaving: Embracing Technology:- Some carpet manufacturers in Essex have introduced machine weaving into their production processes to satisfy the needs of the modern market. While this approach boosts productivity and regularity, it also raises concerns about maintaining the originality and distinctiveness of handcrafted carpets.

Types of Carpets Produced in Essex

Essex is home to a wide range of carpet varieties, some of which are:

  •  Aubusson carpets: The unique patterns and vivid colours of these carpets set them apart. They are usually produced using a process known as "double knotting," which results in a highly thick and long-lasting carpet.
  • Oriental carpets: Carpets in Essex borrow their designs from Middle Eastern and Asian rugs. They generally have vibrant colours and geometric patterns.
  • Country carpets: These carpets are distinguished by their simple designs and earthy hues. They are frequently manufactured from natural materials like cotton or wool.

The Speciality of Essex Carpet Designs

The use of colour in Essex carpets is among their most defining characteristics. The region's natural beauty serves as a frequent source of inspiration for Essex weavers as they employ a wide variety of brilliant hues in their carpets. The elaborate patterns in which the colours are frequently arranged enhance the beauty and complexity of the rugs.

The usage of symbolism in Essex carpets is another distinguishing trait. Numerous symbols significant to the weavers and their community can be found on Essex carpets. For instance, the sun is frequently used to represent optimism and wealth, while the lotus flower represents purity and enlightenment.

The Role of Carpets in Essex Culture

  •  Carpets as Symbols of Prestige and Wealth: Carpets in Essex have historically been associated with luxury and status. These expensive floor coverings became a status symbol in the neighbourhood because only the wealthy could afford to decorate their homes with them.
  • Carpets in Social and Religious Settings: Additionally, carpets have had a significant impact in social and religious contexts. They are frequently utilized in ceremonial occasions, religious gatherings, and special events to improve the atmosphere and provide a sense of luxury.

The Impact of Globalization on Essex Carpets

  1. Challenges and Opportunities: Globalization has brought both opportunities and challenges for the carpet sector in Essex. While the market has grown internationally, it has also sparked more competition and mass-produced knockoffs, endangering the genuine art of making handcrafted Essex carpets.
  2. Revival of Traditional Crafts: The same exposure to a global audience has, however, also prompted interest in traditional crafts, resulting in a resurgence of admiration for handmade carpets. The importance of conserving this age-old art form is recognized by craftspeople and carpet enthusiasts everywhere.

Preserving the Art of Carpet Weaving in Essex

  • Supporting Local Artisans: Supporting regional artists and their communities is essential to ensuring the survival of this historic craft. Fair compensation and skill development expenditures support artists' livelihoods and the art form's survival.
  • Promoting Cultural Heritage: Preserving the relevance of Essex's carpet tradition requires public awareness and promotion. This cultural history can be primarily maintained through the efforts of museums, cultural events, and educational initiatives.

The Enduring Appeal of Essex Carpets

  • Timeless Elegance in Interior Design: Essex carpets are still a mainstay in home design because of their classic elegance and adaptability. These rugs lend a sense of elegance to either traditional or modern environments.
  • Unique Pieces of Art: Each handcrafted Essex carpet is a unique work of art, making them prized possessions for collectors and art enthusiasts. Every carpet gains value and personality from its innate distinctiveness.

The Future of Carpet Weaving in Essex

The craft of carpet weaving is still a strong heritage in Essex today. The industry does, however, face particular difficulties. The growing rivalry from foreign manufacturers is one difficulty. The shifting customer tastes are another issue.

Despite these difficulties, carpet weaving in Essex has a promising future. The Axminster Carpet Weavers' Association and the Kidderminster Carpet Weavers' Association are the only two groups that assist the industry. These organizations seek to advance carpet weaving as a craft and make sure it survives into the future.

In Essex, England, making carpets brings together elements of culture, history, and innovation. These carpets have forever changed the world's textile industry, compared to their ancient origins and contemporary developments. Several experienced artists still practice their craft in the county's ancient carpet-weaving communities. Also, numerous holidays and activities are held to honour the art of carpet weaving. Essex carpets will continue to adorn homes and spaces as we embrace sustainability and protect the craft's heritage, reflecting the character of an area rich in culture and design.

How to choose the perfect carpet for your Essex home

Nothing compares to a soft, luxurious carpet that can brighten your home. Carpets are the choice of a traditionalist these days, but it delivers unmatchable aesthetics compared to their alternatives. There is simply no substitute for sound absorption, warmth and overall comfort provided by carpets. They are the heart of every home in Essex.

However, with so many colour and material options available, choosing the perfect carpet for your home becomes challenging. Some materials may require frequent cleaning, while others have a heavy price tag. Making a wrong decision may result in a carpet that may wear out quickly and show stains despite your regular cleaning.

It is the time to protect your investment and choose the best carpet for your home. Here are some tips to help you choose the best carpet for your beautiful home in Essex.

Pick the Perfect Padding: Just as a building needs a strong foundation, the carpet also needs strength and a bit of extra cushioning. Picking a create without extra padding may make it prone to wear and tear. Paddings are generally made from rubber or foam and act as insulation to help control your home's temperature. Proper padding prevents carpet backing and fibres from falling over time. High-traffic areas like drawing rooms and bedrooms require firm padding, while low-traffic areas like guest rooms may need less protection.

Consider Carpet Style: Essex Carpets come in many styles, like plush, Saxony, Berber, and textured. While each style has a distinctive look, they should not be the only thing to look for. Instead, look at how well your lifestyle meshes with a particular carpet style. Plush carpeting is thick, soft and inviting, whereas the Saxony style is perfect for low-traffic areas. In contrast, Berber carpeting has continuous fibre loops that make them highly durable, and it doesn't show tracks, soil and stains.

On the other hand, textured carpets are made from fibre cuts which cause them to reflect light. This makes it difficult to see tracks and dirt. Choose a style that best matches your lifestyle. This is the perfect way to choose the best carpet for your home.

Don't Blow Your Budget: Even the most luxurious Essex carpets do not have to cost a fortune—request separate pricing for materials and installations to make a detailed comparison among different suppliers. You can choose high-valued stain-resistant carpets for your drawing rooms, but affordable low, trafficking carpets may do fine for your guest rooms. Consider different materials before you buy to balance price and comfort. Carpets made from wool are the best, but they're also the most expensive. Synthetics like nylon feel like wool, but they're cheaper. Look for cut-rate options like Olefin or polyester for moisture-prone areas like basements or stairways.

Understand Maintenance Requirements: One of the best ways to buy the perfect carpet is to buy one that can be maintained easily. Homeowners with kids and pets should avoid carpets that are hard to clean. In such cases, buying a stain-resistant carpet is the best possible option. Always learn from the salesperson how often you must clean the carpets with extensive maintenance requirements unless you have extra time to perform these tasks. It is advised to pick textured rugs if you want to conceal footprints. In high-traffic areas, look for textured Saxony-style carpets.

Try different Colors and Patterns: Picking the right carpet finish might be the most challenging part of your carpet-buying process. You can narrow your search by choosing shades that suit each room's overall mood or tone. Use cool blues or greens for a calm, peaceful atmosphere or warm reds or golden shades to make an ample space feel cosy. You can make small rooms feel more extensive and more open by using light colours like cream or tan.

Pick a neutral shade based on whether you want the carpet to be the focal point or fade into the background. If your walls, furnishings, or artwork are the room's focus, you can avoid a plain, monotone look. Tweed or textured carpets can hide stains, too. Patterned rugs work best with other patterns in the same colour family.

Ask for samples of each colour you're considering. Bring home the most prominent samples you can find to examine them in natural light before you buy.

Go Green: It is shocking to learn how much carpet, padding and adhesives can affect your health and air quality. The distinctive smell that carpets emit is due to VOCs contributing to the poor air quality inside homes. Protect your loved ones by choosing  Essex carpets made from natural products like wool, jute and other organic materials. You can also go for eco-friendly carpets that promote a sustainable environment.

Consider Size: If you plan to add a carpet to your home, make sure that it is manageable and should cover a considerable portion of your floor. Small rugs only throw the space out of proportion. Alternatively, if you have a large room, do not purchase huge carpet because it can make your furniture look small.

Above mentioned are the main points you should remember while choosing a perfect carpet for your home in Essex. The carepets here are manufactured in high-quality fibers of wool, polypropylene, polyamide, and blend to ensure steadfastness of colour with lower cost of maintenance and long-lasting survival in high-traffic areas.

  • Softer Feel Underfoot: Are you someone who spends most of their time at home barefoot? If you are, then carpets, no doubt, act as a built-in slipper that covers all your floors. The fibres are not only soft but the padding and thickness provide squishiness to the floors, hence making them extremely comfortable. Sitting on the floor also becomes comfortable with the presence of the carpets. Carpets, without a doubt, create a luxurious underfoot sensation that adds an extra touch of comfort to your home. The material, the type and the thickness of the carpets affect how soft the flooring feels. Take time to explore the options and pick a carpet that offers the exact level of softness you want on your floors.

  • Warm Floors: Carpets are a good replacement especially when your floors are cold. Essex Carpets add an insulating effect on the floors and help to retain the heat. This makes them the perfect flooring options for your bedrooms in Essex. The warmer floors will also help to reduce your heating bills. The soft fibres of the carpet trap the air and thus act as thermal insulators by minimizing heat loss. This helps in creating a comfortable and cosy environment at home.

  • Improved Acoustics: The fibres in carpets also provide insulation against sound. Instead of letting the sound bounce off the floor, the carpets absorb the sound to cut down noises and echoes. Carpets also act as barriers thereby minimizing the impact of footsteps, voices and other sounds that echo in your home. This is an extremely beneficial advantage of carpets especially when you are sharing your living spaces, homes and apartments. In such circumstances, noise reduction helps to create a quiet and peaceful environment.

  • Health and Safety: Carpets tend to give more traction to your hard floors. This helps to reduce the risk of falling and slipping. It is beneficial when you have small kids at your home and they are just learning to walk. However, if someone still happens to fall, carpets provide a soft landing and thus minimise injuries. Make sure to choose a carpet with thick padding if you have small children at your home.  Another biggest advantage of installing Essex carpets in your home is that they minimize the symptoms of asthma and allergy. This is because carpets trap allergens that irritate your asthma symptoms.
  • Versatility in Design: In terms of colour and pattern, carpets are available in a wide variety of textures and patterns, making it possible for you to find the perfect carpet to complement your interior design style. There are carpet options to enhance the aesthetics of your Essex home no matter whether you prefer a traditional, contemporary, or eclectic style. Depending on your style and personality, you can create a personalized look by choosing from a wide array of carpet materials, pile heights, and designs that will make your home reflect your unique style and personality.

  • Minimal Maintenance: Essex Carpets are extremely durable floor-covering options that require minimum maintenance. Regular vacuuming with a high-quality vacuum cleaner will help to keep the debris, and dirt away. Getting your carpets cleaned by a professional cleaner can also enhance the longevity of your carpets. Numerous carpet options in Essex now offer stain resistance which makes the rugs easier to clean when spoils happen inevitably. The protection from stains enhances the life of carpets thus making them the centre of attraction in every home in Essex.

  • Cost Effective: Compared to other flooring options, Carpets can easily fit into anyone's budget. One does not have to make a hole in a pocket to find perfect carpets for their homes that seamlessly blends with their interiors. Installation of carpets is also easy as compared to other flooring options. It is less labour-intensive as compared to other flooring options like tiles which makes them quite affordable. If you are on a tight budget but still want your space to be aesthetically pleasing, then carpets are just the best option for you. The warmth and insulating properties of carpets help to maintain a comfortable temperature at home potentially reducing the need for excessive heating during colder months in Essex.

  • Sustainable: It might come as a shock to you, but it has become increasingly common for carpets to be environmentally friendly in recent years! As far as natural fibre carpets are concerned, they come in a wide variety of types, including those made from wool, jute, and sisal. Many carpet manufacturers have started turning to natural fibres to create some fantastic eco-friendly alternatives to nylon, olefin and polyester carpets that look and feel just as good as their nylon and olefin counterparts.

In today's society, there is a great deal of concern when it comes to the harmful effects of consumer materials on the environment, and a lot of household products are being held to account for their environmental impact. We still have carpet in our homes because we can choose a form of it that is more environmentally friendly than what we are used to. The consensus is that jute or sisal is not the most popular material at present, but this may change shortly.

A product that is made to be sustainable will be more likely to be embraced in the future as it becomes more sustainable. This is also true in the case of carpets.

The benefits of installing carpets in your home are numerous, and they'll make your space comfortable, functional, and aesthetically pleasing. In addition to providing unmatched comfort and cosiness, carpeting has insulating properties, noise-reducing capabilities, and design versatility that make it a popular choice for homeowners. Furthermore, carpet contributes to improved indoor air quality, creates a safer environment for all ages, and is durable and acoustic. Aside from being stylish and practical, carpets are easy to maintain. Simple vacuum care tips

We’ve mentioned the importance of regular vacuuming in one of our earlier blogs at Carpets Direct but routine cleaning is a waste of time if you don’t keep your vacuum in perfect working order. How do you keep the vac working perfectly though, and what type of maintenance will it require? Try these pointers and it’ll pick up dirt with no problems!

  • Read the instructions – The manufacturers of vacuum cleaners provide user instructions for a number of reasons. They give you advice, they prevent you from hurting yourself and they stop accidental damage to the vac. Read the user’s guide before you switch the vac on for the first time, it’ll tell you what to do, how to stay safe and give you simple maintenance tips as well.
  • Empty bags or cylinders – Aim to empty the refuse bag or cylinder on the vac when it gets about 60% full. Not only will it make the cleaner more efficient, it’ll prevent cylinders from overflowing or bags bursting all over you carpet.
  • Detangle brushes – Get into the habit of removing tangled hair from the brushes in your vac, leave it too long and the brush might jam. You can use nail scissors to cut away at tangled hair if it looks like your vac has chewed a wig!
  • Clean filters – If your vac is fitted with filters, clean or replace them from time to time to improve the efficiency. Some vacs are fitted with washable filters, just rinse them under warm water and leave to dry to remove dirt and debris.
  • Watch out for dangers! When you vacuum a carpet look out for small obstacles that could be sucked into the vac and cause damage. Items like hair clips and bobbles can wreak havoc with the interior of a vac, avoid this by checking what you hoover.
Learn how to vacuum in easy steps

The best way to keep your carpet clean is to give it a regular vac but how many people actually take the time to learn how to vac properly? A quick ‘trundle’ over crumbs isn’t the best method to adopt, care and precision is required if you want to give your carpet a comprehensive clean. We recommend regular vacuuming at Carpets Direct, follow this routine if you want a cleaner home.

  • Dust first – Before you start vacuuming dust furniture, blinds and windowsills, dust will drop onto the floor and you can ‘Hoover’ it up when you clean the carpet.
  • Take things slowly – There’s no need to run around your lounge with your vacuum cleaner, it’s not a formula 1 car! Slow and steady is the key to good vacuuming, use short repetitive strokes, backwards and forwards to achieve the best results.
  • Overlap areas – Use an overlapping system so you know where you’ve vacuumed and where you still have to go, this will ensure you pick up all the dirt and debris.
  • Avoid passing over the same spot – You should be able to see where you have vacuumed, making too many passes over the same area is counter-productive.
  • Move the vac frequently – Every four or so strokes move the vac to the left or the right. This way you’ll have a good system going and it’ll make it easier to work your way around the room.
  • Use crevice tools – Tools are great for getting into ‘hard to vac’ areas, you can use them on the base of skirting boards where the carpet ends for example, it’s always hard to vac these areas even if your vac has an ‘edging’ feature.
  • Get right into corners – Dust likes to hide away in corners and crevices so this is another time to use crevice tools. If the vac can’t quite reach into a corner, grab the wand and suck dirt away this way.
Wool Carpet for Chigwell

In Chigwell wool carpets have always been popular and this trend seems set to continue into the future. 3 simple carpet cleaning tips

We supply a range of affordable flooring at Carpets Direct and know how much pride our customers take in their homes. So we wanted to give you a guide to caring for carpets, this way your new investment should last for years. Read or blog on carpet care and keep your flooring looking fabulous throughout the year.

Vacuum at least one a week: Make friends with the Hoover or form a relationship with your Dyson instead. Regular vacuuming removes a build-up of dirt and it’ll clean crumbs, hair and debris off your carpet in next to no time. Get into the habit of vacuuming the carpet at least one a week and that’ll help the fibres to last longer. Take your time with the vacuuming and cover every single fibre if you can to give the carpet a really good clean.

Clean away stains: Spills can be a problem on carpets so it’s best to tackle them as soon as they occur. Act fast and you can save a carpet from being stained for life. Soak up most of the spill using kitchen paper and gently dab the affected area. This should get most of the stain out of the carpet, use fresh kitchen towels until they won’t absorb any more liquid. Finally get a little carpet cleaner and day or spray that onto the affected area. Use a fresh dry cloth to dab the rest of the stain away, don’t rub the carpet or this could damage the fibres.

Get a professional clean: Carpet manufacturers recommend you have a professional clean on your carpet at least once a year. We’d agree with that at Carpets Direct, maybe have a clean in time for spring and one just before Christmas so your home is nice and fresh.  Use a specialist cleaning service and it leaves your carpet cleaner, your home smelling nicer and prolongs the life of the flooring at the same time. If you follow our tips they should help to keep your carpets in great shape at all times.

Ways to stop dents in carpets

Fit a new carpet in your lounge and the last thing you want to see is unsightly dents that spoil the appearance of the flooring. Sadly, it’s hard to avoid dents if you have heavy items of furniture but with a few precautions you can lessen the impact of indentations on your carpet. This blog looks at ways to prevent dents in your carpet so your new flooring looks gorgeous at all times.

  • Pick a high density carpet:  Opt for a heavy duty carpet that can withstand the wear and tear of everyday life. Try to run your fingers through the fibre on the carpet, if you can see the backing look for another where the backing isn’t visible. Choose a high-density carpet that has a heavy fibre and it should be able to withstand the loads that are placed upon it by heavy furniture.
  • Pop a few coasters down: Furniture coasters are brilliant at lessening the impact of heavy weights. They spread the load and distribute the weight of the furniture so the problem isn’t concentrated in one area. They’re good for carpets and laminate floors as well and you can choose them in a variety of styles and finishes to match your home’s décor.
  • Use off-cuts of carpet: Make your own foot coasters out of left over sections of carpet. Cut them into squares or circles and pop them underneath the feet of furniture to keep your carpets free from dents. They’ll co-ordinate with the existing carpet and could help to preserve the life of your carpet for many years.
  • Swap things around: Change the position of furniture from time to time and that should stop dents from becoming permanent fixtures. It’s good to have a change every now and again and by repositioning your furniture it’ll leave less of an imprint on your new carpet.
Tips to protect carpet from paint

Paint and carpet don’t mix very well, if you splash paint on flooring it’s a nightmare to remove. So we looked at paint protection at Carpets Direct and investigated ways to keep your carpet looking pristine even if you to have to redecorate a room.

  • Cover floors before you cover walls: Dust sheets made from cloth or plastic sheeting are a good idea if you are painting a room. Cover the carpet with a ground sheet next to and below the area you are painting and that should catch any paint that you spill. Dust sheets are good for protecting other items of furniture too and they’ll prevent them from being covered in paint splashes after DIY projects.
  • Use newspapers: Old newspapers and magazines are handy if you are painting small areas. Place them along the edges of the skirting board and they’ll be ready to collect any paint that falls from a roller or a brush. You could tape a few sections of newspaper together to form a formidable barrier and prevent your carpets from getting a glossy makeover!
  • Try an edging tool: Plastic edging tools are great for skirting boards and doors. You can get up close and personal with woodwork when you use an edging tool and it’ll protect the carpet underneath.
  • Don’t go crazy with the roller: It’s easy to get carried away when you are ‘rollering’ a wall or a ceiling but spare a thought for the carpet and the objects that are around. Nice smooth strokes are best, don’t attack the wall like a maniac because you’ll have splatter everywhere!
  • Stop drips with brushes: Overloading is a killer when it comes to painting. Put too much paint on the brush and you can’t complain if there are the odd drips here and there. Simply put a moderate amount of paint on the brush, wipe off any excess and you’ll reduce the chances of dripping on your Axminster and you bursting into tears.
Removing Stains from Laminate Flooring

Laminate flooring is generally very resilient, durable and low maintenance, but there are some stains and spills that require a little extra attention. Here’s our quick guide to how to deal with some of the most common spills and stains that might affect your laminate flooring:

  • Blood – If you have children then you’ll know that cuts and scrapes are just a way of life as they grow! If any blood ever ends up on your laminate flooring then the best way to deal with it is to use window cleaner. Spray a small amount onto the stained area and wipe away immediately with a warm, mildly damp microfibre cloth.
  • Chewing gum – In the event of chewing gum becoming stuck to your laminate flooring, carefully scrape away as much as possible with a plastic or silicone knife. Gently rub away any residue with a soft cloth, dampened with some white spirit.
  • Nail/shoe polish – If nail polish or shoe polish accidentally get spilled on your laminate flooring, simply take a microfibre cloth, dampen with a little acetone nail polish remover and gently scrub until the stain comes up. Once the stain is removed, wipe the area with a clean, damp cloth to remove the acetone residue.
  • Crayon/ink/wine/soda – All of these stains can be removed by using a mildly damp microfibre cloth. For stains of this nature that prove to be a little more stubborn try applying a little white spirit to the area to lift the stain.
  • Heel marks – Scuffs and marks from rubber heels can leave flack patches on your laminate. However they can easily be removed with a regular pencil eraser.
  • Grease – In the event of a grease spill start by applying an ice pack to the area until the grease hardens. Once it has hardened you can scrape it away using a plastic or silicone knife or spatula. When you’ve removed as much as you can, apply a few squirts of window cleaner to the area and gently rub with a damp cloth to remove the greasy residue.
How to Clean Carpet

When you’ve invested in a new carpet for your home you’ll want to ensure that it lasts a long time. In order to promote the longevity of your carpet it’s important to follow some simple care and maintenance tips. We’ve put together a short guide to help you care for your carpet and keep it looking its best:

  1. Vacuum regularly – The most effective way to clean your carpet is to vacuum it regularly. It is recommended that your vacuum your carpet two to three times per week, and daily in high traffic areas like hallways and gangways. Make sure your vacuum is well maintained and up to the job, i.e. the bar should be free of lint and fuzz, and any blockages should be removed as they will affect its suction power.
  2. Rugs and mats – In high traffic areas it’s beneficial to cover the carpet with a mat or rug. For example welcome mats can be placed in doorways that lead in from outside so that people can wipe any dirt or debris off their feet before it gets trodden into the carpet.
  3. No-shoes zone – One of the best ways to protect your carpet and keeping looking as good as new is to operate a no shoes policy. Ensure that everyone who enters your home removes their shoes at the entrance. This way there’s no chance of dirt making it onto your carpet in the first place.
  4. Spot clean spills – If some liquid such as juice or wine gets spilled on the carpet start by mopping up as much of the liquid as possible with a dry cloth using a blotting action. A little water and white vinegar should be sufficient to treat most stains, just remember to blot rather than scrubbing.
  5. Don’t scrub – As mentioned above, when dealing with spills it’s important not to scrub the carpet. This damages the carpet fibres and allows excess water to get into the carpet pad where it can form mildew and start to smell.
Facts about wool carpets

Wool carpets are a great flooring solution for any home. If you’re thinking about getting one for a room in your house or are interested in finding out more about them, here are some interesting facts that are sure to convert you into a fan of wool carpets.

Firstly, wool is a really durable material. This means that you can stretch it by more than 35% and it will still spring back into its original shape. Therefore, even if your carpet is in a zone of your house that gets a lot of use, the carpet will still look new for ages after you’ve bought it.

Being a natural product, nature’s purpose for wool is to keep sheep warm and dry. When it’s used to make wool carpets, you get all of those great benefits, too. For example, not only is wool really squashy and warm underfoot, but it can also take in around a third of its weight in moisture without feeling damp. This is great if you accidentally spill or drop some liquid on it as it will be much less noticeable that you’ve done so.

Wool carpets are also extremely stain resistant – they are up to 30% more resistant to stains than synthetic carpets. This means they’re ideal to have in the event you spill food or someone tramples dirt over them. The natural waxy coating of the wool also stops the stain from sinking so deep into the carpet. This makes it much easier to remove stains from wool carpets than it does from most other carpets on the market, making them perfect for children’s bedrooms, living rooms, dining rooms and more.

When you consider that a single sheep can produce up to 30 pounds of wool each year and that there are over 1000 breeds of sheep in the world – many of whose coats can be used to make carpets – this makes wool carpets a great, sustainable resource as well as a great-looking one.

Why are Natural Carpets So Popular?

Natural carpets are very much en vogue in homes throughout the United Kingdom, spread over floors in homes from Scotland all the way down to the South Coast. Whether they are Sisal, Seagrass or Coir designs, they are valued by homeowners for a huge amount of reasons, many of which will be explained in the article below…

The biggest factor that delights those buying natural carpets the most is the fact that they simply look stunning. They come in a huge manner of different designs and colours, plus they are able to integrate perfectly with virtually any surrounding, regardless of how modern or rustic the house already is. Granted, you won’t often be able to get some of the more extreme colours that regular carpets often come with, but let’s be honest – how many people really want lime green or bright orange floors in the home that they are so proud of anyway? A natural carpet will simply provide that understated charm and elegance that most people are looking for…

Another massive reason why people choose natural carpets is already hinted at in the name – they are natural! There is something satisfying in knowing that you are using what nature has given to us instead of the manmade carpets that others use, and the feel of natural carpet under your feet certainly underlines this. Just remember – natural carpets mean just that; they have had absolutely nothing added to them in the production process and are made entirely out of products found within the natural world. This also means that they are incredibly environmentally friendly as well, with no chemicals or other damaging substances added to them throughout the production process.

Another reason that people are opting for natural carpets in increasing numbers nowadays is due to the fact that they are now much easier to clean. It used to be the case that having natural carpet in your home was an invitation for long cleaning processes and stains within months of them being laid, but the cleaning technology available now means that keeping a natural carpet clean is an incredibly easy job – as easy as cleaning a regular carpet. There really is no need to be concerned about having to put in any extra effort when it comes to natural carpets!

The final reason for natural carpets becoming increasingly popular is the same reason attached to many things that increase in popularity – the price! This is because the cost of natural carpets has been steadily falling for a number of years now, meaning that they are becoming much more affordable for the average homeowner. It would be a lie to say that they are the same price as a regular piece of carpet, but at the same time you get so much more style and luxury with natural carpet that the extra cost is more than worth it!

As can be seen, there are a huge amount of reasons for natural carpet being so popular throughout the country, whether it be Sisal, Seagrass or Coir carpets. Perhaps it could be the next addition to your home…?

Treat Your Employees Right with Finer Commercial Carpets

It does not take much thought to understand that the high traffic areas of a business require commercial carpets.  With feet running over such floor coverings all day, you do not want to invest a lot of money on commercial carpets that will be worn down to nothing in a year or two.  Yet there are places where more expensive, finer looking carpets are acceptable, and choosing them can lend a lot to rooms that and areas that will benefit most from them.  As such, utilising higher grade commercial carpets in certain spaces can be a good way to make such areas stand out from the rest of your business.

There is perhaps no place better suited to such materials in any business than the offices of managers and upper level employees.  While commercial carpets are still a good bet as such rooms still see quite a bit of traffic, finer carpets are available that will express your appreciation to the individuals that work in such areas and will let visitors to that area see that you have invested in your company and take pride in your surroundings.  Your managers work hard, and seeing nicer commercial carpet in their offices may keep them interested in staying with your company.  They should not have to walk on the same thin commercial carpets that are suited to showroom floors – they deserve something nicer for their efforts.

Commercial carpets come in a variety of colours and thicknesses, and while all are designed to stand up to wear and tear longer than traditional carpets, some are certainly nicer than others.  Choosing those finer commercial carpets for the employees who work hardest in your business is a gesture that certainly does not go unnoticed.  You do not have to spend a bundle of money on commercial carpet to make an office look well furnished.  By utilising the quality commercial carpets available on the market today you can turn any workspace into a comfortable working environment for the employees that deserve special attention.

5 Reasons to Choose Wool Carpets

Wool carpets have been popular for hundreds of years and some of the earliest examples of rugs and carpets in the world have been made from wool. It is no surprise, then, that they are still so sought after today. If you are looking for a new carpet for your home and are wondering whether wool would be a good option for you, read on to check out five great reasons to choose wool carpets.

 They’re durable

One of the best things about wool carpets is that they are durable. They can last for sixty years or more as long as you care for them properly, so they are a great choice if you are planning to stay in your house for a long time. The fact that they are hard-wearing means that they are good for any room of the house and they are especially great in bedrooms, as the fact there tends to be less foot traffic in these areas means you’ll get the maximum amount of use out of them.

They’re practical

Another great benefit of choosing a wool carpet is that they are very practical. One of the biggest draws here is that wool doesn’t burn and so it poses much less of a fire hazard than would a carpet made from a synthetic material. It is also relatively easy to clean wool carpets when compared to synthetic ones and this is a big reason a lot of people love them. So, even if you are worried about muddy footprints or messy children, the vast majority of stains can be removed from a wool carpet.

They’re cost effective

The fact that wool carpets last for so many years and are so easy to clean as well as being fire retardant means that they are very cost effective. It generally costs more up front to buy a wool carpet, but when you get such great use out of it, the price is more than worth it. It definitely pays to think of long term value and, while you might have to replace a synthetic carpet within fifteen years, a wool carpet will last much longer and therefore work out as better value in the long run.

They look great

Another reason to choose wool carpets is because, quite simply, they look great. Wool is very easy to dye and so you can find wool carpets in lots of brilliant, vibrant colours as well as more muted shades. This means you are sure to find something that you absolutely love. They also hold their colour really well as long as you look after them properly – just think of all those Persian wool carpets that are hundreds of years old and still look as good as new.

They add luxury to your home

Finally, having wool carpets in your home is a great way to add a bit of luxury into your décor. Wool is really soft and springy underfoot, making it extremely comfortable and nice to walk on. The fact that wool is a natural material just adds to the sense of luxury and no matter what your style, you’re certain to find the perfect option for you.

Choosing Different Contract Carpets for Different Areas

When purchasing contract carpets most businesses tend to buy one material and use it in every area of their business, seeing it as applicable in nearly every situation.  This can be a mistake, as any contract carpet should be carefully considered when transitioning from room to room.  After all, not every type of flooring works equally well in every room, and contract carpets that look great on your showroom floor may not work so well in a consulting room or a general, everyday office.  By putting a little thought into your carpets you go far in making your business as attractive as it can possibly be.

A showroom begs for understated contract carpets.  You do not want patterns on your floor stealing the attention of your customers away from your products.  As such, areas that feature products should utilise contract carpets that are without patterns and feature quiet, understated colours.  This does not mean they must be boring – a carpet can be unobtrusive while remaining interesting.  Yet contract carpet should be careful not to pull the eyes of customers to the ground when they should be focusing on your shelves.

At the same time, choosing a different kind of contract carpet to use in other areas of your business can be a great way to set such areas apart.  You do not want offices in a business to feel just like showroom areas – doing so can make employees feel like products and can confuse customers when they enter such areas.  As such, picking contract carpets with more flair – light patterns and more bold colours – can set offices and break areas apart.

Ignoring the importance of contract carpets in a business is a grave mistake that can cost your business.  By carefully considering every aspect of contract carpet before installation you can be sure to make the best possible choices and get the most out of your purchase.

Wool Carpets Have Evolved Through the Years

When we think of wool carpets we tend to consider them as static objects – wool has been around for thousands of years, and it is easy to assume that it has not changed much.  Yet even in our own lifetimes the materials that go into wool carpets have changed a great deal, as have the practices implemented in their creation.  While people may make the mistake of thinking of their wool carpet as a simple, uninteresting piece of floor covering that has no real story behind it, the advances in wool technology are actually quite fascinating and deserve attention from those who utilise this product.

Advances in wool carpet weaving are among the most incredible on the list of achievements, and they are responsible for the current state of the industry.  In the past wool carpets were expensive to produce, requiring a great deal of labour for even a small piece of carpet.  Today, however, a large wool carpet can be produced extremely quickly by a machine for far less money than was required in the past.  As such, buying a wool carpet makes a little less impact on an individual’s wallet and purchasing large sections of such flooring is economically reasonable.

In addition, technology developed in the past few decades has minimised the static electricity held in wool carpets, eliminating the hassle that once accompanied the materials.  While walking across wool carpet in socks might have once given anyone a considerable shock, one can do laps in their sitting room today with no adverse consequences.

While it may be an old fashioned material, wool is not without its own advances, and as time has gone by wool has changed considerably.  The wool carpets in our homes and businesses have evolved, and we can expect them to change even more in the years to come.

Create the Perfect Atmosphere

There are many flooring surfaces available to those choosing new floor coverings for their businesses.  With various hardwood, laminate, and carpeting options available, understanding the reasons why wool carpets are the best can sometimes be a bit difficult.  Yet there are very clear reasons that wool carpets are the answer to your flooring needs, providing benefits that other floor coverings simply cannot match.  While other options may have their own benefits and drawbacks, the advantages of wool carpets are very clear, and after considering the facts associated with them anyone can make an educated decision about choosing such flooring materials.

First and foremost, wool carpets provide an appearance that welcomes customers to your business in ways that other floor coverings simply cannot.  When customers walk into your business and see wool carpet running across your showroom floor they are greeted with a sense of familiarity and friendliness not provided by other materials.  Laminates appear fake and cold and create an atmosphere of impersonality and disinterest.  Such substances subtly suggest to customers that they will not receive the personal touch they crave in their business ventures.  While hardwoods are slightly more appealing they still do not bring about the same warm emotions of empathy and caring that wool carpets do and as such are inferior in their effect.

Of course, cost is important as well, and wool carpets absolutely have hardwoods beat in such matters.  Hardwood floors can rob a business of most of its flooring budget in a flash, and laying such materials in a small office can easily cost as much as laying wool carpet throughout an entire sales area.  Laminates are often closer to the price of wool carpets but still typically cost a bit more.  In light of the poor atmosphere they create, paying more for a less effective product just does not make sense.

Finally, giving your employees a little something extra through wool carpeting goes a long way in creating a happy, healthy work environment.  Your workers do not want to come to a salesroom that has a floor lined with impersonal laminate, and they probably are not too keen on putting money towards hardwoods that could go towards better office tools like updated copiers or improved lighting.  Creating an atmosphere reminiscent of home with wool carpets helps employees stay comfortable and allows them to enjoy their work atmosphere. This is important because when people are comfortable, they produce better results.

Wool carpets may seem like a strange choice in some circumstances, but when the factors above are considered they become the clear choice for many commercial businesses.  Showing your customers that your business cares about making them feel comfortable through the application of wool carpet can go a long way in establishing and holding onto business.  At the same time, keeping employees comfortable and happy ensures that those customers get the quality service they need.  It all starts with the right flooring material, and wool carpet is a clear choice in nearly any circumstance.

Consider Style of Commercial Carpets

In choosing commercial carpets for their business most people take a very narrow minded approach.  They focus only on cost, looking at the bottom line of every commercial carpet option rather than how it looks in a particular setting or how the colour of the floor covering might affect customers.  Yet paying special attention to the styling of the carpets you install in your business is extremely important to understanding how customers will react to your products and services.  Only with research and a great deal of thought can you make a well-educated decision on what type of commercial carpets suit your needs.

For example, an auto dealer might find that their business location lacks sophistication if they were to install bright orange commercial carpets on their showroom floor.  While a manager might pick them out thinking they look exciting and that they will push customers towards more expensive, exciting models, the colour orange makes people move faster.  An entire floor of bright orange commercial carpet will make customers more inclined to move through the process quickly and will likely turn them away from the car buying process, which is known for being rather slow and taking time.

By the same token choosing commercial carpet with colours that turn customers towards other products can move them away from your products as well.  Shades of green tend to motivate people to eat.  As such, having a floor covered in a soft green commercial carpet will likely strike up hunger in them and encourage them to hurry off to find something to eat.  If you have a restaurant next door, inappropriately coloured commercial carpets can force customers away from your product shelves and around the corner for a bite to eat.  While it may seem like a simple floor covering, the commercial carpet you utilise in your sales areas is actually crucial to your success, and choosing the correct style of carpeting for your setting is extremely important.

Yet there is more to style than simple colour.  Many commercial carpets feature some sort of texture or faint pattern, and when not too busy these carpets are perfectly acceptable for your showroom.  If you are not careful, however, you can set your products back by making them appear dated against an old looking commercial carpet.  If a particular texture on a commercial carpet is near the end of its fashionable life it may soon make your products appear old as well.  As such, choosing patterns that are fresh and inviting will help you move your inventory faster than dated carpets.

It is easy to open a catalogue of commercial carpets and choose the first inexpensive option that jumps out at you.  Doing so can, however, lead to some pretty serious consequences down the road.  Choosing new commercial carpet requires some research on the behalf of the purchasing company to avoid mistakes in connecting products to their surroundings.  With careful thought floor coverings can lead customers towards purchases.  Without careful consideration, an ill-fitting commercial carpet can quickly pull customers away.

  • Use lint brushes – Roller brushes are really handy for removing stray hairs, they’re good to use every day to keep on top of ‘hairy’ issues. Trickle a lint roller over your sofa before you flop down to watch telly at night and you won’t have to worry about hairs sticking to your clothes.
  • Or sticky tape – This is another good solution if you want to remove hair in a hurry. Wrap tape around your hand, dab it over fabrics and upholstery and it’ll collect hair and leave material blemish-free afterwards.

Weird, wonderful and scary facts about carpets

We love our job at Carpets Direct, we’re the direct link between customers and quality carpets so how could we possibly not enjoy every day we spend in the office? Okay, some days are better than others, this is one of the better ones so we thought we’d have a little fun and share with you our top trivia about carpets, hope you like these quirky facts.

·         What does ‘carpet’ mean? - The word ‘carpet’ stems from the Latin term ‘carpere’ which means ‘to pluck’ and is probably used because early carpets were made from ‘plucked’ fabric, hence the link. That’s our theory anyway!

·         Vacuum cleaners are unhealthier than carpets – Well according to Philip Tierno in his book The Secret Life of Germs the air blowing from a carpet cleaner is one of the biggest producers of germs. It’s right up there with toilet flushes, kitchen bins and dirty dish clothes too. Scary eh?

·         Viruses live on carpets – Here’s something that might make you want to give your carpet a clean. Nicholas Baklar’s book entitled Where Germs Are states the Norovirus which causes the stomach flu is capable of surviving on the surface on a carpet for anywhere up to a month. Carpet shampoo anyone?

·         Vacuum cleaners used to be powered by coal - Believe it or not early versions of vacuum cleaners were massive, it took three people to operate them and some were that big they were left outside a property and hoses were pushed through windows to clean the carpets inside. You’ll find further information about early vacuum cleaners in the aptly named Vacuum Cleaners book by Elaine Marie Alphin, check it out if you are short of reading material right now.

Stubborn stains and how to deal with them

It doesn’t matter how careful you are around the house, bet your bottom dollar you’ll spill something on your carpet or drop something down your clothing at some point. Chances are it’ll be a stubborn stain too, something that’s dark, sinister and looks like it’s totally ruined your goods.

Take heart though, there are ways to remove the most stubborn stains, try these ideas if you are facing a problem at the moment.

Tea stains – Oh dear, you’ve made a cup of rosy lee, you are just about to sit down with a plateful of hobnobs and you drop the cup on the floor. Firstly, dab as much of the stain up as you can with paper towels to remove most of a moisture. Don’t let the stain dry though. Next, as tears well in your eyes head into the kitchen and mix a little baking soda with water. From a paste, smear it over the stain and leave it for 15 minutes. Wash the area afterwards and the stain should disappear.

Red wine stains – A red wine stain on a carpet can send you into shock, snap out of it though, you need to act fast and the best thing to do is grab a bottle of white wine. This isn’t for drinking though. Dab the excess moisture up and pour white wine over the spill. Leave to settle for a moment or two then dab away gently until all of the red wine disappears. You might want to shampoo the carpet afterwards to remove the smell of alcohol otherwise your home will smell like a brewery.

Curry stains - Bought a takeaway as a treat but ended up with most of it down your shirt? Dab away the excess then treat the area with glycerine before popping your shirt into the washer on a warm setting. Use a proven washing powder and hopefully your shirt will emerge from the wash stain-free.

Stand fast against stains, don’t let them ruin your life.

The best things about a new carpet

Save up for a new carpet and when you can finally afford to order and pay for the wool twist it’s such a fabulous feeling. A new carpet brings so much pleasure to your life, you might not realise this at the time but this new flooring will enrich your life in so many ways.

You’ve lived with the old carpet for so long you’ll have forgotten how brilliant a new wool or wool twist carpet is, let us remind you and it’ll bring a few memories flooding back.

No more stains – Carpets get stained, that’s part of everyday life, they get trampled on, you drop food on them, drink on them and pets (sorry to say this) wee on them as well. Shampooing gets rid of stains but they’re stubborn and they keep on coming back. New carpet is stain-free, it’s totally devoid of blemishes, the fibres feel great and they look perfect too.

No more threadbare areas – Carpet wears and after a while you can start to see the backing underneath. Eke out your carpet as long as you can and it’ll start to look rather worn in certain areas. The moment you lay a new carpet this is forgotten, look after your new carpet and it’ll be years before it shows sign of wear and tear.

No shrinkage – Carpets start to shrink with age too, if you can see the grippers at the side of your room it’s definitely time to think about new flooring. Once the new carpet is laid is gives you wall to wall coverage, shrinkage will be the last thing you have to worry about.

No embarrassment – Carpets are one of the main features of your home, make do with an old and rather tatty carpet and what does that say about your house? It’s embarrassing to live with a worn carpet, it’ll put you off inviting people to your home. Have a new carpet fitted and you can’t wait to show it off.

The new smell! Know the best thing about a new carpet? The smell! It’s a shame you can’t bottle the scent of a new carpet, not only does it look good, it smells amazing too. Rooms look cleaner and smell fresher with new carpet, isn’t it time you thought about getting your carpet replaced?

Wool carpet vs. synthetic carpet

Whether you’re purchasing your first carpet for your new home, or replacing old carpet in your existing home, the question of wool versus synthetic carpet is bound to come up. As with most things in life, there are pros and cons to each type of carpet. As the carpet experts we’re here to offer advice and assistance to help you choose the right carpet for you...

Synthetic carpet

Carpets made from synthetic, manmade fibres such as polypropylene, nylon, or polyester are often treated with solutions like Teflon, giving them a higher level of stain resistance. No carpet is completely spill-proof, but if a spill went unnoticed for a while on a synthetic carpet there’s more chance of you being able to remove it with a heavy duty spot cleaning treatment.

If you have children and/or pets and your main concern is having a relatively stain-proof carpet that is easy to clean then a synthetic carpet is probably the best choice for you. Synthetic carpets often work out a bit cheaper than wool carpets so they’re a good choice for a young family just starting out on the property ladder with children and pets.

Wool carpet

If your main concern when it comes to carpet is durability and lifespan then wool carpet is probably the best choice for you. Wool fibres have a natural elasticity and can bounce back into shape after being compressed underneath furniture. This natural resilience allows wool carpets to withstand a great deal of day to day traffic for a long time.

However, wool carpet is not as resilient to spills and stains as synthetic carpet. If a spillage were left to soak into a wool carpet it would eventually seep past the natural oils in the wool fibres and stain the carpet permanently. If you’ve got young children or pets then at least opt for a darker coloured wool carpet so that any stains won’t show up as much.

Carpet jargon busted: types of pile

When you’re shopping for a new carpet you can suddenly find yourself faced with a confusing set of terms. Unless you work in the carpet industry you might not be au fait with the difference between a twist pile and a velvet pile, and you probably won’t know your Axminster from your Wilton. Don’t get lost in the jargon and end up buying the wrong carpet, read on as we explain what each type of pile actually is...

  1. Twist pile: This type of carpet is made from a yarn that has been twisted together tightly, creating a short, dense pile that is resilient to being crushed underfoot.
  2. Velvet pile: These carpets have a short, dense pile which is elegantly cut to give a smooth, velvety texture. The short pile also makes them very low maintenance.
  3. Cut pile: A cut pile carpet is created by strategically cutting the loops that are created during the weaving process. They are cut to the same height and allowed to tuft slightly, giving a soft, cushiony feel underfoot.
  4. Shag pile: This type of carpet is made in the same was a cut pile but the tufts are extra long for a super soft, shaggy look.
  5. Saxony: This is another cut pile carpet comprised of twisted tufts. It is dense and luxurious, best suited to bedrooms rather than high traffic areas.
  6. Loop pile: Also known as Berber, this type of carpet is made using heavy yarn which is looped to form a uniform height or a textured pile. It maintains its appearance and hides footprints well so is ideal for a high traffic area.
  7. Cut and loop: As the name suggests, this is a type of carpet made with both cut pile and loop pile to give a textured, patterned effect.
  8. Flatweave: This is a type of carpet which is created by interlocking vertical (warp) and horizontal (weft) threads. The pile is looped but has no height, giving the impression of flatness.
  9. Needle felt: A process called electrostatic flocking charges the nylon fibres, making them stand upright. This creates a dense, durable carpet which can’t be achieved via traditional manufacturing techniques.
  10. Axminster: This is a machine-woven carpet with a velvet look, created by weaving individual pieces of yarn over the weft. This type of carpet is known for its durability, quality, and longevity.
  11. Wilton: This is a high quality carpet woven with up to five colours of yarn per pattern. A Wilton carpet can either have a looped or cut pile; and the main difference between a  Wilton and an Axminster is that the Wilton yarn is a continuous strand woven all the way through the carpet.
The benefits of rugs

Carpets and laminate flooring can be an expensive investment for a homeowner, not to mention the disruption to your daily life whilst they’re being fitted and installed. After the time and effort of having a new carpet, laminate, or hardwood flooring installed what happens when you fancy a change and want to give your living room a new look?

Replacing the carpet or flooring is an expensive and unnecessary task when you simply want to update the look of your living room. That’s where rugs come in handy. Rugs have many benefits for homeowners, and tenants alike...

  1. A rug can help to complete the overall decor of your living room. If you feel like something is missing, even after purchasing various scatter cushions, wall hangings, and ornaments, the answer lies in a rug. Match it up to the colour scheme and watch your room transform into a homely, cosy environments.
  2. A rug doesn’t require professional installation. If you get bored of it and want to replace it, or simply want to move it to a different part of the room or house then you simply pick it up and move it!
  3. Rugs can make a room feel larger. They shift the focus away from plain walls and ceiling and create the illusion of depth and space in a room.
  4. Rugs won’t lose their value. If you care for your rug properly it will last you a long time, and you’ll cherish it as it moves from home to home with you. If you’ve invested money in a Persian rug it’ll hold its value for future resale if you take good care of it.
  5. Rugs are vibrant and colourful. A monotone beige carpet simply can’t compare with a rug. They instantly add pizzazz to any room and can become a great conversation piece for your guests.
  6. Rugs are a soft, plush way of breaking up a room and adding some new texture. When placed on laminate flooring the rug offers a snugly, warm surface for your feet when the laminate feels chilly in the winter months.
  7. Rugs protect your flooring and can help you to get more out of your carpet. Placing a rug down from the start will prevent stains on your carpet or laminate. If it’s too late for prevention then use a rug to cover up unsightly stains, your guests won’t know a thing!

Carpet Fire Resistance

These days, everything is about health and safety. Sometimes this can be over the top and only serves to create work for the paper-pushers, but in terms of carpet fire resistance, nothing could be more important.  Your home and your workplace need to be kept safe from fire, so if possible, you should choose carpets which offer the most fire resistance. We at Carpets Direct mobile showroom will come to your London home or office to help you save money and make the right choice for your carpets!

We all are aware of what damage a fire can do, and we take as many steps as possible to prevent fire from breaking out in our homes or workplaces. So it only follows that if choosing a new carpet, we should check to see what fire regulations the carpet adheres to.

In the UK, look out for two British Standard marks. BS5287 and BS4790. These should be clearly visible on labelling and instructions. If the carpets comply with these, they correspond with the latest guidelines for carpet safety. Whilst most carpets will catch fire given enough heat, modern carpets are designed to resist ignition, and if set alight they are designed to resist further burning, and in most cases a patch of burning carpet will extinguish itself in under a minute.

Fairly obviously, different types of carpet have different levels of fire resistance. You may find that acrylic carpets are less resistant than wool for example. So if fire resistance is important to you, this may be a consideration when choosing your carpet. Remember, it only takes a second to start a fire, so having a good fire resistant carpet is important, especially if you are more likely to be around flames, such as being a smoker. You will be unsurprised to learn that a significant number of deaths and serious injuries are caused by smokers’ accidently setting light to their carpets at home. Choosing a fire resistant carpet can help prevent you becoming a statistic.

In commercial carpet and contract carpet situations, a fire resistant carpet may be needed for insurance purposes. This isn’t usually a problem, as commercial carpets are generally tougher than residential, as they need to cope with much heavier traffic. They also have much smaller piles than more luxurious residential carpets, which make them less susceptible to fire.

If you already have a carpet, and you’re not sure of its fire resistance, it can sometimes be difficult to find out. You may need to contact your carpet supplier to find out, or check the documentation which came with your carpet. If you can’t do either, or want to be doubly sure you are protected, there are a number of products which can add further fire resistance to your carpet. These usually come in sprays which when applied will add a protective layer to stop a fire starting or spreading. If you purchase a fire retardant spray, make sure it complies with British Standard BS5438-1989 and is tested to BS 4790. This should be clearly marked. You should also find these sprays are odourless and non-hazardous to pets, but make sure on the packaging. Usually a 500ml bottle will cover approximately four metres squared of carpet.

Choose the Right Underlay for your Carpet

Many people spend hours, and sometimes days, thinking about what type of carpets (wool, nylon, polyester,…) to choose for their homes. After all, there’s a multitude of different patterns, colours and thicknesses to choose from, and getting it right is an important consideration. This is where Carpets Direct can help you by visiting your home or office in Kensington, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Mayfair or city of London with its mobile showroom. Whatever carpet you eventually choose, you’ll be using it every day for a number of years. So why then, is the same consideration not given to the type of underlay?

Choosing the correct underlay is just as important as choosing the carpet itself. Okay, admittedly you will never see it once the carpet has been laid, but you will definitely feel its presence every time you walk on your carpet, especially if you have a wool carpet. There are also different types of underlay which perform in different ways, so you need to choose the correct underlay for whatever purpose the carpet will be used for. For example, you may want a tough hardwearing underlay for a hallway which receives heavy traffic, whereas in a lounge you may prefer a heavier more luxurious underlay which will feel softer underfoot.

Let’s face it; it can be quite confusing when trying to choose an underlay. To the untrained eye they all look fairly similar, and they all feel soft and springy when tried out in the showroom. You may also have spent a while choosing your carpet, and by the time you’ve got around to thinking about underlay you’re ready to call it a day.

Underlay is generally classified in weight. Common weights are 60lb, 80lb, 100lb, 130lb and 150lb, and usually come in three different types; Sponge rubber, PU Foam and Crumb Rubber. You should choose the weight of your underlay depending on how soft and thick you want your carpet to feel underfoot. Generally speaking, the heavier the underlay, the thicker and more luxurious your carpet will feel. The exception to this rule is the 150lb underlay, which may feel harder and stiffer. The underlay with the most luxurious feel is usually 130lb.

Another consideration is what type of subfloor you have. Concrete floors are generally colder than floorboards, so you should choose an underlay with a high tog value, as this will give better insulation. If you have under floor heating, you should choose a low tog underlay, as you don’t want heat from your system to be reflected back under the carpet.

If comfort is not critical, such as in commercial carpets and contract carpets, then you could consider using an underlay made of crumb rubber. This is made from recycled car tyres, so you will be helping to save the environment as well as covering your floor. The recycled tyres are crumbed and then bonded together to produce a very hardwearing and long lasting underlay.

In the home, you would probably be better to go for a sponge rubber underlay. These are particularly good for wool carpets and anywhere where the best comfort is needed. Sponge rubber underlay also absorb more sound than other underlay, helping the acoustics of your room.

We at Carpets Direct mobile showroom will come to your London home or office to help you save money and make the right choice for your underlay carpets!

Club and Pub Carpets Are Usually Hardwearing and Resilient

When thinking about carpets for a club or pub, you should probably go for something that is extremely hard wearing and easy to clean. This speaks for itself really, as all pubs and clubs experience a high level of traffic. No matter how careful your customers are, there are always going to be spillages, ranging from a few drops here and there to entire pints and jugs of beer being dropped. It’s therefore imperative that your choose pub carpets and club carpets that can be mopped easily and won’t stain. Dark colours work a lot better, as you’re not only going to be dealing with spilled drinks, but also dirty footprints. We at Carpets Direct mobile showroom will come to your London pub or club to help you save money and make the right choice for your carpets!

Your pub or club may have a homely feel to it, but it’s unlikely you will convince your customers to take their shoes off before entering. Therefore you need pub carpets and club carpets in the main area of your club or pub that will handle a huge amount of dirty footprints. There are many carpets that are suitable, most of which repel water to stop dirt and grime from getting into the piles and staining.

You don’t want to be spending a great deal of time cleaning your pub carpets, so one that can be cleaned easily will be a great benefit and a money saver in the future. Many carpets that are suitable for pubs and clubs simply need vacuuming once a day to be kept clean, and perhaps a wet-clean every couple of months. With the right type of club carpets, you’ll be surprised at how resilient they can be, standing up to all kinds of abuse.

Around bar areas, you may want to consider even tougher pub carpets and club carpets. These are the areas where most spillages and accidents occur. People are handling drinks that are full to the brim, and passing drinks between themselves. Some pubs and clubs that offer food and snacks will find that people eating at the bar will also drop food onto the carpets that may then be trodden in. A resilient carpet in these areas will significantly help to keep your establishment clean and tidy.

Most of all, good carpets in all areas will be comforting and homely to your customers, and they will want to spend longer in your pub or club as a result. Your customers will also be more likely to return and that means more profitability for you.

Taking Care of Natural Carpet

Carpets Direct can help you by visiting your home in Kensington, Knightsbridge, Chelsea, Mayfair or City of London with its mobile showroom. When you take a look around any room of a home, one of the first things that you are drawn to is the carpet, therefore meaning that it is one of the most vital components to think about when decorating a house. There are a huge number of different options out there, but natural carpets are one type that are really becoming more and more popular among people all over the country. There are a number of different types to choose from - such as Sisal, Seagrass and Coir – therefore meaning that there is something to suit everyone’s needs.

One thing that often worries people about natural carpets though is how they should take care of them, as most people purchasing them have only ever had regular carpet or floor covering. The fact is though that they are not hugely difficult to maintain and, although there are some things to know, there is no need to be overly concerned about damaging them as soon as they have been laid!

Perhaps the main thing that all buyers of natural carpet should know is that they tend to hold moisture a lot better than standard carpets – which has both advantages and disadvantages. The advantage is that it makes them a lot less prone to fire, however the disadvantage is that they do stain more easily. This problem of stains can be avoided though with the right action when something is spilled on them. The first step would be to take a number of absorbent towels and to place them over the spillage and apply pressure, therefore sucking the worst of the liquid out. After this you should use a stain remover that does not contain any bleaches or dyes to remove the rest of the stain.

Most carpets usually undergo a thorough clean once a year and this should be the same with natural carpets. The difference is though that regular carpets can be easily cleaned using a “wet” method, whereby the carpet is covered in liquid and left to dry. The problem with this method is that natural carpets are prone to shrinking when they are wet for a prolonged period of time. There are two solutions to this: the first is to use a wet method but to ensure that there is a way to dry the carpet quickly, such as heaters in the room, and the second is to use one of the many dry methods for cleaning carpets that companies offer. The latter usually costs about the same as the former and will provide results that are equally as good.

The upkeep of natural carpets is not something that anyone should be scared of and it certainly shouldn’t put people off buying them. Just taking a look at the way that they can enhance a room will prove that they are more than worth the investment! As already stated, there are a number of different natural carpet options for you to choose from (e.g. Sisal, Seagrass, Coir) therefore meaning that you can be guaranteed that you’ll find the perfect choice for you!  We at Carpets Direct mobile showroom will come to your London home to help you save money and make the right choice for your natural carpets from sisal, coir to seagrass!

We at Carpets Direct mobile showroom will come to your Office or manufacturing premises to help you save money and make the right choice for your carpets! When choosing a carpet for your offices or premises, you should also consider the practical use of the areas you’re covering. Generally office carpets are resilient and hard wearing mainly because they have to put up with a lot of traffic throughout the working day. They also have to put up with wheeled office chairs being rolled across them, and the occasional accident with a cup of coffee. If you’re choosing carpets for office areas, you may want to consider protecting them with a barrier substance that stops moisture from penetrating the piles. Any spillages can then be easily mopped up with minimal staining and damage.

Your staff will be grateful that you have installed good office carpets. After all, in an office, your staff will be there for eight or more hours a day, a good proportion of your staffs’ lives, so it’s only right that they are well looked after. A good working environment with comfortable office carpets will mean your staff will feel more at home and work better.

If you often have guests and customers visiting your offices, you will also find good office carpets to be a benefit. The way your office looks is a testament to the way you run your business, so a well-maintained office with nice carpeting will speak volumes about your business etiquette. You will find your customers are more likely to do business with you, and your guests will be more likely to recommend your business to their associates and friends. Just one extra deal because your customers felt comfortable could pay for your office carpets.

The benefits of good carpeting in your offices or premises are numerous, and with the right choice of hardwearing office carpets your offices will look good for many years to come. You will also find that spending a little extra on good carpeting will easily pay for itself over the years in greater productivity and a good reputation. Let Carpets Direct help you by visiting your offices or factory in Chelsea, Mayfair, City of London Kensington or Knightsbridge with its mobile showroom.

Emergency Carpet Stain Removal: Red Wine

Your home and your workplace need to be protected from stains and spillages; so if possible, you should choose carpets which offer the most stain resistance, call Carpets Direct mobile salesroom for advice and help! You’ve just spilt a glass of fine Burgundy on your best wool carpet, what do you do? Well, apart from running around the house, trying to find the nearest thing to mop it up with… firstly don’t panic. It’s important to get most of it up as quickly as possible, but you’ll do a much better job with more haste and less speed.

Firstly, rubbing white wine onto red wine won’t work. That is just an old wives tale. It may appear to work at first, but all you’re really doing is diluting the red wine to make it look better. Secondly, don’t rub the stain vigorously, as this will only grind the red wine further into the carpet pile.

Get yourself some high absorbent paper, kitchen paper will do, and an ample supply of clean water. Mop up as much of the wine as possible using a dabbing motion with the towels. Keep doing this until you can’t get anymore out of the carpet. You won’t be able to get it all out at first, so don’t worry. Pour some of your clean water onto the stain to dilute the wine and start dabbing again. You should be able to get more of the wine up, and you’ll see this on the absorbent paper. It’s important to keep dabbing until most of the water has been removed. Repeat the process of pouring water onto the stain and dabbing until you can’t see any more wine on the paper.

Hopefully by now you should have got most of the stain out. The more dabbing you did the better the stain will be.

Use the towels to soak up as much water as you can, because the next step requires the area to be damp, but not sopping wet. Get yourself a soft damp sponge and put a very small amount of washing up liquid onto it. Apply this to the stain and this time rub the stain vigorously. Don’t use too much detergent; because you don’t want lots of bubbles, you just want the detergent agent of the liquid to lift the remnants of the wine from your wool carpet pile. Continue to rub the carpet for a good couple of minutes, and you should see the froth around the stain turn pink and red as the soapsuds lift out the wine.

Now it’s time to start the dabbing and diluting process again. Each time you repeat this method, the better the stain will be, until hopefully you won’t be able to see it at all.

This method works on most types of carpet, including wool, commercial carpets and contract carpets. You may find these easier to clean however as the piles are usually a lot closer together and don’t absorb the wine quite as much.

If the stain still shows, you may have to consider using a stronger detergent. There are many solutions on the market including special dry-cleaning chemicals. However care should be taken when using these, and you may need to call in the professionals.

Deciding Whether to Replace Carpet is Simple

The carpet in a room can make or break its aesthetic and determine how people feel while inside that room.  If it is fresh and clean and makes visitors feel comfortable and modern, a carpet produces a positive aesthetic.  In contrast, if a carpet looks worn and frayed, is covered in stains from years of use or looks outdated, those walking into the room will likely feel negatively towards the room and, by association, the things that take place in that room.

As such, keeping the carpets in your business location up to date and as modern as possible is extremely important to sustaining an adequate flow of business into your doors.  If customers walk into your space and are greeted with ugly carpets, their attitude will likely reflect their dissatisfaction and will lead to strained business relations.  They may take that worn carpet to mean that do not care for your property and by association that you likely do not care for your customers, either.  By the same token, a fresh, clean carpet suggests to customers that you like to see every part of your business taken care of, from the customers who give you their money to the ground they walk on.

It is not difficult to see, then, that having carpet that reflects positively on your business is extremely important to your lasting success.  But when is it time to update your old carpet?  How can you tell that it is in need to replacing?

First, take a stroll through your business as if you were a customer just walking in.  Go the places they would go and pay careful attention to any exposed carpeting.  Are there stains that are visible to customers?  Does it have a generally worn and ragged appearance?  If so, this is your first sign that it is time to get new carpet.

Next, get down on the floor and look to see how frayed the carpet really is.  If it is visibly pressed into the ground in common areas then it needs replacing soon.  By the same standard, if the loops of the carpet are split in many places or is even unraveling, make sure to get it replaced right away.

Finally, consider the styling of the carpet.  For most people this is the easiest method of all, and it certainly does not require a professional eye.  Does the carpet appear old?  Is its pattern of a style that has long since fallen out of popularity?  Do not take chances here – if it is starting to look outdated now it will be even more out of place tomorrow.

There is no reason that deciding whether or not to buy new carpet needs to be a difficult process.  It is actually very easy to tell whether or not a carpet is in need of replacing.  Simply by considering the above elements of a carpet, anyone can find flaws that will turn customers away from your business.  Lost business is lost money, so look at a new carpet not as an expense, but as an investment toward your continued success.

Shop Carpets Play a Big Role in Customer Psychology

If you’re in retails and own your own shop, you’ll probably understand that making your customers feel welcome is the first step towards the ultimate goal of making a sale. The more comfortable your customers are, the more likely they will be to spend more time in your shop, and more likely to purchase goods. Why not let Carpets Direct Mobile carpet services solve your problems.

Shop carpets play a big role in helping to generate a warm and friendly atmosphere that will make your customers’ feel relaxed and willing to browse. Shop carpets also help to direct your customers to areas of your shop you want them in most. For example in larger shops, you should have harder and more compact carpets in aisles so that your customers travel more quickly along them to areas where you are selling. In contrast, areas around shelves where you want customers to linger should have thicker, more comfortable shop carpets, which will help keep customers in those areas around the items you want to sell the most.

Shop carpets play a much bigger role in retail selling than is commonly known. When you last visited a shop, where you aware of the carpets at all? Probably not is the answer, but even though you weren’t aware of them consciously, you would have noticed them on a sub-conscious level. When you move from one area of the shop to another and the carpet changes, you instantly feel like you’re in a different place. This can be further highlighted by your shop’s colour scheme. A different colour scheme in different areas of your shop, in combination with different shop carpets, strongly suggests to customers they’re in a separate area than before, without them even knowing it on a conscious level.

As for the type of carpet you using in your shop, you will undoubtedly want a shop carpet that is easy to clean on a daily basis that is hard-wearing and will last for a long time. Areas around payment areas and changing rooms will receive a lot more traffic, so consider using a different carpet here. You can sometimes build hard-wearing shop carpet areas into your overall colour and décor scheme. For example a different colour around your payment areas will highlight to customers where they need to pay. Most shops do not allow food and drink in order to protect merchandise and carpets, but should there be an accident a shop carpet that protects against moisture and spillages is a good idea too.

With Carpet Direct, you will have the best of quality you will need for your homes and/or offices. Here are some of the positive traits of a good striped wool carpet.

  1. It is soft and flexible and it’s made up with high quality wool materials.

  3. It has the capacity to retain its original appearance much longer than other materials.
  4. Its natural moist characteristics will be able to resist flame, combustion, and any other thing that will bring a challenge to safety.
  5. Its soft nature reduces the impact of a fall, so the safety of your children is well-assured.
  6. It is a natural insulator, which has the ability to adapt to any weather condition. It gets cooler during the summer and gets warmer during the winter.

Correct Balance for your Hotel and Restaurant Carpets

Hotel carpets and restaurant carpets are probably the most luxurious type of commercial carpets available. Particularly in hotel rooms, you want your guests to be completely at home, and that means a warm, soft, and luxurious carpet. Much of the time, your guests may be walking around with bare feet, so it’s important that the carpets is of good quality that feels good underfoot.

With hotel carpets, not only will you have carpets in all your rooms, but also in hallways, corridors and reception areas. These carpets will receive a great deal of traffic, and will sometimes have heavy objects such as suitcases and furniture dragged along them. It’s important in these areas to have a hardwearing commercial carpet that not only looks good, and will continue looking good, but also is practical. Don’t forget that in corridors, your staff and guests will sometimes want to wheel suitcases along, so a thick-piled carpet will be unsuitable. A hotel carpet that offers little resistance to wheeled objects are best suited for these areas.

Restaurant carpets, in comparison to hotel carpets offer a unique conundrum. On one hand you want a thick luxurious carpet that diners and guests will enjoy, but on the other hand you want a carpet that is easy to clean following meals, and is hardwearing at the same time to cater for heavy traffic from waiters. In most cases, there are restaurant carpets that offer a combination of these qualities. A carpet that is both hardwearing and easy to clean, but yet soft underfoot with a luxurious feel, is an ideal carpet for your restaurant areas.

When choosing a colour scheme, consider a dark coloured carpet that won’t show dirt and grime too easily. You may not be able to clean and wash your carpets as often as you’d like in a busy environment, so light colours that show marks easily should be avoided.

You will find that if you get your hotel carpets and restaurant carpets right, your guests and customers will feel at ease and will enjoy their time with you. Happy customers are much more likely to return in the future, and they will recommend you to their friends and family. Whilst this may not be entirely down to your choice of hotel carpets and restaurant carpets, every little detail goes towards making the overall experience for your customers a pleasant one.

Natural Flooring Brings Interest to a Room

When you redecorate a room you must pay careful attention to the colour palette and texture that will be combining to create a visually pleasing space.  Adding bright colours on a wall in well chosen patterns or distinctive swatches can brighten up a room and make it look more vibrant.  When you choose truly vibrant colours for walls or ceilings it is important to offset them with a neutral floor.  Natural flooring for: sisal, coir and seagrass carpet ranges offer a wide variety of neutral tones that are very warm and work with almost any colour scheme.

The unique patterns found in the warp and weft of these carpets adds a bit of visual interest to a room without drawing attention away from the bright colour scheme.  Carefully chosen lamps and art pieces can really bring the room together to create a cohesive whole.  By using these carpets thoughtfully you can bring a warm rustic feeling to your home that makes it an inviting place to enter.

Rustic is a decorating scheme that often goes hand in hand with large country homes and hunting lodges, but it also works nicely in a den or living room.  A whole house decorated on a rustic theme might be a little overwhelming, but these carpets are available in several different rug designs as well.  If you like the natural wool carpet offerings, but think that a whole room would be a little too much, explore the many different rug options available.  A variety of shapes and sizes means that these rugs can work with any space. Additionally, natural fibre carpets are great for those rooms that serve as a in between room from the inside to the outside. It is far easier to clean natural carpets than it is to clean manmade carpets. You can also clean natural carpets using natural products instead of harsh chemicals. Sisal, coir and seagrass actually require very little cleaning apart from hoovering. If you hoover on a regular basis, you will be able to maintain your natural carpets in good stead for years to come.

Whether you are looking to make a statement with green living, or if you think that natural carpets are just better wearing, they are a good all-around choice.  Durability means that it is a great choice for families and offices, residential homes or any other place where the carpets will be subject to increased use, spillages, or mistreatment. These natural carpets can stand up to just about everything, and still come out looking pristine. For those among us that are budget conscious, just like manmade carpets, natural carpets come in a range of prices and styles that will suit anyone’s pocket book.

If for some reason you find that you are in need of replacing your carpets, you should definitely consider natural carpets. In fact in some places, you might find that you receive rebates for changing to an ecologically friendly option for your carpeting.  Why not choose natural carpets the next time that you have to replace your carpets. You will find that they are a great option.

At the end , Carpet Direct did a good & clean job and i am happy with their job, However i must say this to future customers, make sure to see all of your other options first and be very sure of your choice before making any financial commitments with anyone, take your time to think through the samples you have been shown before making any calls or booking appointments with any trades man. Sometimes with so many people phoning you up and coming to show you samples, you might get a bit overwhelmed, just take your time ... Do not let any one talk you into choosing a colour of rug dift from what your original choice was. Be wise, you are in control.

Carpets Direct's reply: I think the lady should have concentrated on me (which after she stated she wished she had stayed with me and had let her husband deal with the toilet) rather than let her husband she went to look after a chap suppling a toilet I ordered and cancelled the carpet three times this Is a record because the customer wanted the carpet/vinyl ùrgent the vinyl came in the next day and the carpet was cut they were both nice people but very indecisive I am sure they are happy with there carpet a better quality than the competitors it was a shame I could not stop the carpet from coming in I did not have the shade of lilac the customer wanted so they chose neutral beige they liked the quality and I think it will go well with there new mauve furniture

Fitting of carpet throughout flat. Carpet & Lino

Overall Graham provides a good, efficient service and has a good selection of carpets. It’s not the most perfectly fitted carpet I’ve ever seen - a little bit loose, a few (small) lumps and bars not fitted perfectly around a door frame leaving a small gap (about 1cm). But overall, and for the price, I’m pleased.

Carpet Laying - Graham at Carpets Direct did a great job.

His price was very reasonable, and he had no complaints about having to deal with the rental agency and a less than helpful tenant.

Supply and fit carpet to small lounge, stairs, hallway

Would thoroughly recommend Carpets Direct. Graham contacted me within hours of my job going onto the website. He arranged to come round the next day and arrived within the time specified. Within no time at all the carpets were chosen (we were quite specific on colours but he had hundreds of samples in his van available to see!) and the fitting was arranged for within a few days.

The fitters (both friendly and polite) arrived on time, they were quick, clean and efficient. There was a mix up with one of the carpets and so they had to arrange to return to fit the living room one but came back only two days later to do this. The carpets look great and we are very happy. We will definitely be using them again when we re carpet the upstairs of the house!

2 Bedroom House, Limehouse, London

Very prompt response and professional. He was on holiday when the carpet was fitted and due to the style of carpet...a thick weave jute sisal, the installer had issues as he was not accustomed to it. Graham took action quickly and had the carpet replaced with a different experienced installer used to the material...no extra charge. Very pleased with the final result.

The Secret to Wool Carpets

Have you ever wondered about different types of wool carpet? No? If not, then you really should because they have a long and diverse history. Plus, with literally thousands of different types of wool in the world, there is a huge amount of potential for variety in wool carpets. We at Carpets Direct mobile showroom will come to your home or office to help you save money and make the right choice for your carpets!

For example, New Zealand is thought to produce some of the very best wool in the world when it comes to making wool carpets. Some wool carpets aren’t even made from sheep’s wool – there are quite a few other animals in the world that also provide wool for these lovely carpets. Examples include goats, alpaca, llamas and camels. Types of wool produced from them include angora, cashmere and mohair. This means there is a massive array of wool to choose from, which is great news for consumers as it means they have lots to pick from and can choose the one they love the most.

You might just think that wool carpets are found in people’s houses and, for the most part, you would be correct. They have long been popular for domestic use and have been used for hundreds – and even thousands – of years. Additionally, wool carpets are also often used in industrial and other settings, largely due to the fact that wool doesn’t burn in the way that synthetic materials do. So, while it might seem surprising, you can often find wool carpets in environments such as trains and aeroplanes as they are considered to be a lot safer than synthetic materials.

This just goes to show how many different types of wool carpet there are and how many different ways it can be used: after all, the wool carpets you see on trains are very different to Persian carpets. This shows that wool is a massively diverse material, which makes it ideal when catering to the tastes of all sorts of people when they are buying carpets. Allow Carpets Direct help you by visiting your office or home in Mayfair, Chelsea, Kensington, Knightsbridge or City of London with its mobile showroom.
